Coming up with a good About section on LinkedIn

I recently completed a four month LinkedIn Advanced Training program with a bank here in Kansas City. Lots of good things came out of our sessions together. And I was reminded that people often struggle to come up with a good About section on their LinkedIn profile. The About section is your first real opportunity to begin establishing relationship with people… even before you’ve met them. But what I typically see is resume language or no About section at all.

In this week’s video, I walk you through the updated profile of Michael McDonald. I try really hard to keep my videos to 5 minutes, but this one is a bit longer. It’s basically a small part of the professional LinkedIn training I provide to companies that I am giving to you for free… I hope you enjoy it and that you’re encouraged to update your own About section on LinkedIn!

Here are the ideas I cover on the LinkedIn About section.

• Invite people in to read more of your About section with a good open.
• Talk about where you come from, where you went to school, why you live here, and maybe how you got your current job.
• Talk about your company and why you like working there.
• Talk a little about your role, but not resume language.
• Talk about your personal life and mention things you really care about.
• Wrap things up and maybe mention next steps for connecting.
